We’re [a tiny team of two](/about) funded by individuals like you. Your patronage goes towards keeping a roof over our heads as we [build the Small Web](/research-and-development).

24

25
We’re [a tiny team of two people](/about#the-foundation). Our work at Small Technology Foundation pays our rent and buys dog food.
Aral Balkan's avatar

26

27
Our rent is currently €1,650/month. We figure we need about €5,000 between us a month to get by comfortably.

Since [the gift from Aral’s parents](#other-funding) has been used up, we are now paying ourselves ~€2,000/mo from the funds in the organisation that have accrued from Better Blocker sales, etc. We have a few months worth of money in the organisation and we are currently thinking of ways of bringing in more money in the short term to enable us to continue to exist.

### Our sustainability (not growth) plan

Aral Balkan's avatar

33
We are building [small-web.org](https://small-web.org) as the first of what we hope will become many interoperable Small Web hosts running [Basil](https://github.com/small-tech/basil). Our plan is to sustain the foundation by charging a little more for hosting than what we pay our upstream provider.

34

35
Eventually, we hope that institutions like the EU will see that our work benefits the commons and fund us from the commons. But we’re not holding our breaths for that just yet.
Aral Balkan's avatar

36

37
Our goal is not to scale Small Technology Foundation itself.

39
That said, it would be wonderful if one day we could afford to get someone to handle the administrative work so both of us can focus all our time on research and development. One day we’d also like to be able to work with other people from the free and open source community and be able to pay them for their time.

Finally, [we speak at a large number of events](/events) to advocate for small technology. These include platforms such as the Nobel Peace Center, The Royal Society of Arts, British Parliament, and European Parliament as well as industry conferences and events. Our work also gets covered in the media. Your donations give us the freedom to carry out this advocacy work.

[We don’t take venture capital](https://ind.ie/ethical-design) and we don’t have the resources to undertake the lengthy application processes for government and EU funding so we need your individual support to help subsidise our work until we can sustain ourselves.

47
#### Pay us to speak at your events
48

49
We get asked to speak at a large number of events. Sadly, many of these do not pay an honorarium. Paying us for these speaking engagements helps us to pay the rent. (Honorariums we receive go directly to Small Technology Foundation, not to us personally.)

#### Help us apply for funding

If you know of any funding opportunities and can help us apply for them (we don’t have the resources to undertake lengthy bureaucratic funding application processes), we’d be hugely grateful.

#### Invest in us

67
We are a not-for-profit based in Ireland that is limited by guarantee. Apart from equity investment (which we cannot accept, since we don’t have share capital), we are open to investment ideas that will maintain our independence and allow us to protect the integrity of our social mission (e.g., share of revenue).
68

69
If you want to invest in the ongoing, sustainable success of Small Technology Foundation, instead of our sale in an exit (which cannot happen), please get in touch with us.

### Revenue to date

77
78
Over the past seven years, we’ve received roughly €500,000 in total revenue from various sources, the largest being the Bank of Aral’s Mom & Dad. Our average burn rate over that period has been roughly €70,000/year (it was higher at the beginning when we had a larger team and is lower now).

Our expenses have also been higher than we’d have liked as [we felt compelled to leave the UK due to the passing of the Investigatory Powers Act and Brexit](https://ar.al/notes/so-long-and-thanks-for-all-the-fish/). We spent two years in Sweden, moving three times within that time. We’ve moved five times in the last two-and-a-half years, culminating in our move to Ireland in 2018. We’re still renting but we’ve enjoyed two years of relative stability here in the same home. It’s had a very positive impact on our productivity and we hope that will continue.

Haluk Balkan and Mehlika Balkan are our main benefactors. Over the last seven years, they have gifted us £267,867 personally to support our work.

The money they’ve invested in our work comes from the sale of three apartments in Turkey. Haluk and Mehlika are Aral’s parents – they are a university professor and a librarian – and they would like it to be known that they don’t have any more homes left to sell.

#### Sales of Better Blocker

__(Ind.ie and now Small Technology Foundation)__

In 2016, we launched [Better Blocker](https://better.fyi) for [iOS](https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/better-by-ind.ie/id1080964978?ls=1&mt=8), followed by [Better Blocker for macOS](https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/better/id1121192229?ls=1&mt=12). In the three years since, we’ve received a total of $86,300 in revenue from sales of the app ($49.1K on iOS, $37.2K on macOS).

95
96
We do not see ongoing reliance on Apple’s closed ecosystem as a viable long-term strategy.

#### Our work with the City of Ghent

__(Historic; Ind.ie)__

In 2017-2018, with [Ind.ie](https://ind.ie), we worked with the City of Ghent to carry out research and development on how Small Technology could be applied at the city level. For this we received €72,000.

#### Initial crowdfunding

__(Historic; Ind.ie)__

In 2014, with [Ind.ie](https://ind.ie), we raised £60,000 via crowdfunding. [$10,000 of that was donated by Rafael Laguna from Open-Xchange](https://www.open-xchange.com/about-ox/ox-blog/article/putting-our-money-where-our-mouth-is/). At one point during 2014 / 15, we had [a team](https://2017.ind.ie/about/team/) of 5 people working at the same time at Ind.ie and we’ve always paid the people we work with.

Finally, we receive free hosting for a number of our sites from [Eclips.is](https://eclips.is) and are in the process of moving as many of our sites over to them as possible to reduce our monthly hosting costs even further.

_Your support has kept us going and gotten us to where we are today. It hasn’t been an easy journey but we would not have been able to get here without being able to continuously iterate on the problem for the past seven years._
