## Research & development
We’re building a small tech platform to act as a bridge between the centralised World Wide Web we have today and the Peer Web we want to see. We call it Project Tincan.
Imagine an Internet where you own your own home at your own address. This is a place that’s private by default where others can easily reach you but where you decide what you want to share and with whom. That’s what we’re developing. We call it Project Tincan.
[Learn more about Project Tincan.](/r&d/tincan)
### Site.js
Develop, test, and deploy your secure static or dynamic personal web site with zero configuration. Site.js is the first tool to come out of Project Tincan.

<p>We’re Aral Balkan and Laura Kalbag (and Oskar the huskamute). We live and work in Cork, Ireland.</p>
{{< /subtitle >}}
We are small by design but that doesn’t mean we do everything ourselves. We stand on the shoulders of giants and exist thanks to the support of our community, patrons, partners, and allies.
Since 2014, we’ve been advocating for regulation of surveillance capitalism, investment in ethical alternatives, and carrying out [research and development](/research-and-development) on ethical alternatives.
After moving to Ireland, we set up the Small Technology Foundation with the mission to evolve the Internet so each one of us can own and control our own place on it.
Our work is private by default, zero-knowledge, peer-to-peer, copyleft / share-alike, interoperable, and non-commercial.
We don’t take money from surveillance capitalists and we exist thanks to [the support of individuals like you](/fund).
## Future
Plans for the future *(these could also be on the Fund page, maybe we can make a content fragment that repeats the same copy on both pages?)*
We are small by design and we’re designed to stay small even as our work becomes more popular.
## History
Small Technology does not grow exponentially. Our goal is not to become a billion-dollar unicorn. In fact, that would be our failure state. Instead, the tools we make scale horizontally.
Important dates of things we’ve done and why
This doesn’t mean that we don’t need income or that we don’t have a plan to become sustainable because we do.
## Previously known as Ind.ie
In addition to our revenue streams from patrons, donations, and sales of Better Blocker on the macOS and iOS app stores, we will be urging VPS hosts who make money hosting our tools to give back a portion of their proceeds to us under an honour system. In return, we will be featuring those hosts who support us as preferred hosts on our site. Our goal is to build an interoperable community of hosts that provide personal hosting services to the general public.
We used to be known as Ind.ie. In 2018 we moved to Ireland, and in 2019 we formed Small Technology Foundation as our Irish not-for-profit organisation. You can [read the long story about our change of name on Laura’s blog](blog-post-about-name-changeTODO).
## History
<!--
The Ind.ie Radar still continues the Ind.ie web site, and you can follow @indie on Mastodon and Twitter for thought-provoking links we recommend most weekdays.

Here is a short timeline of imprortant events in our history.
- 2014: Ind.ie is formed in Brighton, UK
- 2015: Heartbeat pre-alpha is released. Heartbeat is the spiritual precursor to Tincan. We realise, however, that our current technology stack is not fit to take the project further. In dire need of funds, we invest our remaining money to develop Better Blocker.
- 2016: The Conservatives win re-election in the UK with a manifesto that details plans to pass a draconian surveillance law (the IP Act), holding a referendum on Brexit, and scrapping the Human Rights Act. As this is fundamentally incompatible with our mission, we decide to leave the UK. Following my opening keynote at The Conference in Malmö, we move to Sweden.
- 2017: Better Blocker is released as a no-nonsense tracker blocker to rave reviews.
- 2018: We move to Ireland.
- 2019: We launch Project Tincan, Site.js, and the Small Technology Foundation.

## Current patronage
Last month we received £233 from 22 generous patrons.
We currently have 22 patrons who contribute €245 a month.
## Funding platforms
## Where your donation goes
Your donation will go towards:
**People and development:** We’re [a tiny team of two people](TODO). Our work at Ind.ie pays our rent and buys dog food. We’d love to hire a few more developers to work on [Better](https://better.fyi) and [Hypha](TODO) with us.
**Advocacy:** [We speak at a large number of events](/events) to advocate on human rights, privacy, and ethical design. These include platforms such as the Nobel Peace Center, The Royal Society of the Arts, British Parliament, and European Parliament as well as industry conferences and events. Our work also gets covered in the media. Your donations give us the freedom to carry out this advocacy work.
**Technology:** Hosting our various services (like [our source code repositories](https://source.ind.ie)) costs us around £400/month.
Your donation goes towards:
### Keeping a roof over our heads
We’re [a tiny team of two people](TODO). Our work at Ind.ie pays our rent and buys dog food.
Our rent is currently €1,690/month. We figure we need about €5,000 between us a month to get by comfortably.
Our goal is not to scale Small Technology Foundation vertically but to build an interoperable network of web hosts who host the Tincan untrusted nodes and give us a small percentage of the fees they get from their customers. Eventually we hope that institutions like the EU will see that our work benefits the commons and fund us from the commons. But we’re not holding our breaths for that just yet.
That said, it would be wonderful if one day we could afford to get someone to handle the administrative work so we can both focus all our time on research and development. And it would also be great to one day be able to work with other people from the DAT community and pay them for their time.
### Advocacy
[We speak at a large number of events](/events) to advocate on human rights, privacy, and ethical design. These include platforms such as the Nobel Peace Center, The Royal Society of the Arts, British Parliament, and European Parliament as well as industry conferences and events. Our work also gets covered in the media. Your donations give us the freedom to carry out this advocacy work.
### Hosting
Hosting our various services (like [our source code repositories](https://source.ind.ie)) costs us around £400/month.
[We don’t take venture capital](https://ind.ie/ethical-design) and we don’t have the resources to undertake the lengthy application processes for government and EU funding so we need your individual support to subsidise us until we reach sustainability.
## Other ways of supporting us
**Buy Better Blocker:** [Buy Better for iOS](https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/better-by-ind.ie/id1080964978?ls=1&mt=8) or [on the Mac App Store](https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/better/id1121192229?ls=1&mt=12). Already using Better? You could always gift it to your friends and family.
**Tell your friends:** Tell your friends about us. Help us spread the word.
**Help us apply for funding:** If you know of any funding opportunities and can help us apply for them, we’d be hugely grateful.
**Invest in us:** We are a social enterprise based in the UK that is limited by guarantee, so apart from equity investment (which we cannot accept, since we don’t have share capital), we are open to investment ideas that will maintain our independence and allow us to protect the integrity of our social mission. If you want to invest in the ongoing, sustainable success of Ind.ie, instead of our sale in an exit (which cannot happen), please <a mailto="hello@ind.ie">get in touch</a>.
